Letters to Thomas W. Lamont and Jack Butler Yeats, 1903-1931.

Primarily letters from Masefield to the Irish painter Jack Butler Yeats (father of poet William Butler Yeats), and a few letters from Masefield to the American investment banker, Thomas William Lamont. Also includes letters from Constance Masefield to Mary Cottenham White Yeats concerning personal matters. Correspondence with Yeats, Mary Yeats and Lamont discusses issues related to literature, such as reviews of Masefield's works, and books and plays by other writers. The letters by Masefield contain various poems, fragmentary drafts of plays, and some drawings and hieroglyphics. Also includes a manuscript poem by Masefield beginning, "the white clouds sweep."

The English poet, playwright and novelist John Masefield was born in 1878 in Ledbury. After running away to sea early (when he was thirteen) he settled in London from 1897 and devoted himself to writing. Later he moved to Oxford which was where he lived when most of the following collection was produced. Masefield became Poet Laureate in 1930 and was awarded the Order of Merit in 1935.
